Santorini is world-famous for its breathtaking views — the real magic is found around the island itself. Here’s a quick guide to the must-see sights and a few hidden gems you’ll want to explore:
Oia Castle
If you do just one thing in Santorini, make it this. Perched on the cliffside in Oia, the ruins of the old castle offer the most iconic view of the blue domes and the Aegean Sea — especially at sunset.
Pro tip: Santorini is known for having one of the best sunsets on Earth, and this is the spot to watch it. That said, you’ll be sharing the view with hundreds of others during peak season. Arrive early to snag a good photo spot. It’s popular for a reason — not a hidden gem, but absolutely worth the crowd.
Ammoudi Bay
Just below Oia Castle lies this charming fishing bay. Descend the steep stone steps (watch out for donkeys and their droppings), and you’ll reach one of Santorini’s best-kept secrets. Ammoudi is home to incredible seafood tavernas and a picturesque little harbor full of boats. It’s the perfect place for a fresh seafood lunch by the sea.
Red Beach
Red Beach is one of the island’s most unique landscapes, thanks to its deep crimson cliffs and volcanic sand — a stunning result of Santorini’s explosive geological history. Located near the Akrotiri Excavation Site in the island’s south, it’s just a 20-minute drive from Fira.
Insider tip: If you’re staying in Oia, hop on a catamaran cruise. It’s the most scenic (and relaxing) way to visit Red Beach, plus you’ll likely hit the hot springs and other coastal sights. I did this tour years ago and it was unforgettable!
Black Sand Beaches
Santorini’s volcanic past means there’s no shortage of striking black sand beaches. Perissa, Perivolos, and Kamari are the most famous — all about 25 minutes from Fira. Whichever you choose, you’ll be treated to gorgeous views and a relaxing vibe.

Visit a Winery
Wineries may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Santorini, but they’re some of the island’s true hidden gems. Thanks to its volcanic soil, Santorini produces exceptional wines.
Top pick: SantoWines Winery — the island’s most iconic and historic vineyard. Founded in 1911, it offers incredible sunset views and delicious tastings. For a more immersive experience, try a small-group wine tour with food pairings or book a private tasting across multiple wineries. There’s nothing quite like sipping crisp Assyrtiko wine with the caldera as your backdrop.
What Not to Do: Please Don’t Ride the Donkeys
One important note: please avoid riding the donkeys up and down the steep staircases. They’re often overworked and poorly treated. I made this mistake during my first visit and regretted it instantly. Just walk — you’ll appreciate the exercise after all that feta!
